Weight measures the force of gravity upon the mass, and mass is the amount of matter in an object. From an early age children measure mass when they tip water from large containers to smaller ones. Eventually they discover that the more mass an object contains the heavier it is. Allowing this experimentation with weight and mass progresses to the use of appropriate units and instruments used to accurately measure both weight and mass.
